Best Bath Time Routine for Baby
Baby baths don’t have to take a long time. Most infants don’t play with bath toys like older kids. They usually get cold quickly too. It’s good to have a routine down so you can get your baby in and out before they get uncomfortable.
Prep The Bath
Put your little one in a safe spot while you draw the bath.
- Get out all the things you need for a bath: towel, washcloth, baby soap, clean clothes, and diaper.
- Fill the tub with water at a safe temperature. Use your wrist to judge how hot the water is. Lukewarm is fine.
- Squirt some liquid soap into the water and mix it around.
- Lay the towel out flat near the tub so it’s ready to wrap up your baby.
- Layout the clean diaper and clothes so they are ready for dressing.
Bathe Your Baby
- Safely put your baby into the tub.
- Never leave your baby unattended. I always put the things I need right next to me. If I need to pick something up I keep one hand on my baby while I use my free hand to pick up the item.
- Clean your baby starting at his head and work your way down to his toes.
- Wash your baby with a washcloth. You don’t need to put extra soap on the cloth, the suds in the waterworks just fine.
- Instead of getting your baby wet all over before washing, get them wet as you move from head to toe.
- Wash in this order: head, neck, arms, tummy and back, legs, feet, and bottom last.
- As soon as you are done washing gently rinse with a washcloth.
- Lift your baby out of the tub and lay on the towel next to you.
- Wrap the baby up in the towel.
- Drain water immediately.
Finish Up The Bath
- Swaddle your baby in the towel for a few minutes, help soak up the water and keep them warm.
- Unwrap the towel and put on a clean diaper. Baby can lay on the towel while you do this.
- Put on socks. Feet get cold first!
- Remove towel and put on pants, shirts, etc.
- Put your baby somewhere safe to clean up the bath time item.
Bath Time Tips
- Distract your baby with singing or baby talk.
- If your baby starts to get upset before you finish it’s okay to stop the bath.
- If you use a moisturizer put it on the baby’s skin while it’s slightly damp to keep in skin’s moisture.
