What if I shared with you an easy way to get in some exercise without sacrificing your time? Start making your SAHM fitness journey more manageable, with these tips to making time to work out at home as a Stay at home mom!
How Can I Make Time To Workout As A Stay at Home Mom?
I get it! How can you take time for yourself when there is so much to do?
The house is a disaster after the weekend. Things need to be organized for the next day. The baby is not going down for a nap. A trip to the grocery store is in order. Getting some exercise would be nice, especially after a stressful day, but who has the time?
It’s easy to push-off working out when you have a to-do list a mile high or if you just want to crash after a long day.
On the other hand, it’s important to take care of ourselves and make healthy choices. Fitness is one way to make sure we are living a healthy life. Working out also gives us time to ourselves to decompress and destress so that we can get back to taking care of our family. Plus, when we exercise, we teach our kids the importance of being active and healthy.
So how do you fit it in?
Well, you are the queen of multi-tasking, so why not tackle your chores while you workout?
This idea came to me the other day when I broke a sweat from vacuuming. Housework can get your heart pumping, just add a few things into the mix and you have yourself a great workout and a clean house!
The 3 Step Stay At Home Mom’s Workout Plan
When I have a million things to do, I like to incorporate my workout routine with housework. Keep reading as I share with you how to squeeze in exercise while putting the house back in order.
The Housework Workout
For this workout, you will need:
- Workout routine
- Messy House
- Good Music
1) Pick The Workout
The first thing I like to do is find a workout regimen. Pinterest has a lot of ideas. Depending on what I need to complete my chores, I may pick a workout of varying lengths. The best fitness routine for this workout is the kind that has three groups of exercise with 3-4 types of moves in each group. For example
Group 1:
- 50 jumping jacks
- 20 squats
- 20 lunges
- Ten push-ups
Group 2:
- 50 high knees
- 20 skaters
- 20 sit-ups
- Run or walk in place for 1 minute
Group 3:
- 20 jump squats
- 50 mountain climbers
- 20 curtsey lunges
- 20 bicycle crunches
2) Pick the Housework
Think of the chores you need to get done. For example, I need to pick up in each room, sort laundry, and do the dishes. I picked this routine because it’s broken up into three sections, and I divide my housework up according to those parts.
3) Crank Up The Tunes
I just yell to Alexa to play workout music, and she plays playlist like “Hip Hop Workout”. For the first song or two, depending on what I’m up for, I jog or walk in place to get warmed up. After I’m warmed up, I start my workout. Of course, I throw in a few dance moves in!

For the next several songs, I jog around the house as I pick items up and put them away. When things are picked up, I stop cleaning and do the first round of moves in the routine.
Then I move onto phase two. While sorting laundry, I jog in place and run each load in baskets to the laundry room. At my house, this requires me to make trips up and down the stairs several times. It’s a great way to break a sweat. Once the laundry is completed, I do the 2nd round of exercises.
After this, I head to the kitchen to wash dishes and empty the dishwasher. For this part, I march in place, and then it’s time to move onto the third and final stage of the exercise routine. I slow it down and either march or walk in place to one last song.
That’s it, my house is put back in order, and I got in my workout for the day!

You can vary the workout according to your personal preference. Some days I am short on time, so I just jog in place while cleaning and skip the routines. Other times I incorporate my own squats or lunges with the work, like lunge walking while vacuuming or squats while washing dishes.
In the end, it doesn’t matter what you are doing as long as you are moving. It is quite fun too because you get to see progress in your housework and feel great from breaking a sweat!
7 Other Ways To Make Time To Exercise As A SAHM
If multitasking exercise with housework is not your thing, here are some other ideas to fit exercise into your day:
- All you need is 30 minutes a day, but if you don’t have a big chunk of time, break it up into smaller increments.
- Workout during quiet times in your day like naptime or when kids are busy watching a show
- Have a daily dance party with your kids, and use that as a time to get fit. Baby Shark can really get you going!
- Short on time? High-intensity interval training (HIIT) workouts give you what you need in only 15 minutes.
- Think of the part of the day you feel the best and workout at that time. Not everyone is an early riser or a night owl.
- Designate days as your workout days and schedule less on those days.
- Be flexible and give yourself grace. It’s okay if life gets busy.
